Winter Tips

  • Sleepy Trees

Deciduous trees are currently dropping their leaves.
  • Pruning

Hard pruning required now to promote healthy growth.
  • Plant Your Trees

Bare root trees are only avalable this time of the year.

Now is the best time to prune all trees and shrubs as most species are now dormant or asleep. Pruning or cutting back the tree/plant won't stun any growth and will help in controlling their size, whilst promoting new growth and flowers.

Proper pruning cuts are made at a node, the point at which one branch or twig attaches to another. In the spring season, growth begins at recently formed buds, that turn in to twigs and grow in to new nodes. The length of a branch between nodes is called an internode.

The most common types of pruning are: Crown Thinning - to increase light penetration and air movement throughout the crown of a tree, Crown Raising - to provide clearance at the bottom of the tree and Crown Reduction - for when a tree has grown too large for its permitted space.
